HONORING A LEGEND

HONORING A LEGEND

Masiya’s Camp at Royal Malewane in South Africa is named after one of the greatest Master Trackers of all time—Wilson Masiya. A man with a natural talent for guiding and a deep understanding of the wild, Wilson guided his entire family through Kruger National Park to flee Mozambique after the Mozambican civil war broke out in the late 1970s. They traveled approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles) completely on foot to secure safe passage into South Africa. In the 1990s, Wilson worked as a tracker for Kruger National Park before joining the team at Thornybush Game Lodge. It wasn’t long until he gained a world-class reputation for being one of the best in Greater Kruger. And it made perfect sense to name a camp at Royal Malewane after him to honor his legacy and legendary status following his death in 2015. Now, Masiya’s Camp prides itself on giving all guests a luxurious and riveting safari experience that blends all the essential creature comforts with the epic beauty of nature.

Royal Malewane offers many more experiences in the wild heart of the African bush. SUITE IT IS

There’s something sublimely special about being ensconced in luxury in the very heart of the wilderness. Rising from your plush king-sized bed every morning and stepping onto your private deck with a cup of coffee in hand, taking in the glorious view as the sun rises and bathes all of nature in its golden light—can there be a more vivid picture of pure bliss? The six tented suites at Masiya’s Camp were explicitly designed with lavish comfort in mind, featuring en suite bathrooms with double vanities and freestanding baths, private decks with heated plunge pools and outdoor lounges with views of the bushveld, mini bars, hidden pop-up televisions with satellite channels and streaming, ceiling speakers, underfloor heating, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. Add to all these amenities elegant and vibrant décor including thick Persian rugs, Marrakech-style pots, vintage floral motifs, and bold artwork. Meanwhile, the guest communal area is a lovely shared space where you can relax, dine, or take a dip in the swimming pool. You’d probably never want to leave your suite if the most gorgeous nature and iconic wildlife didn’t beckon from right outside your window.

GUIDED BY THE BEST

Royal Malewane is also known as the “Harvard of the bush,” thanks to the many talented and extremely skilled members of the guiding team. Professional guiding qualifications require extensive, comprehensive knowledge and certain technical skills called the Special Knowledge & Skills (SKS) Qualifications, which few guides in Africa ever achieve. The team at Royal Malewane boasts these qualifications and then some—two of only 13 Professional Field Guides with the prestigious FGASA (Field Guides Association of South Africa) Scout status are on the Royal Malewane team in addition to two of only 11 Master Trackers in the world.

These professionals ensure guests get the most out of every activity available during their stay. From twice daily game drives and explorations on foot during bush walks to visits to Royal Malewane’s Conservation and Research Centre and helicopter patrol flights. Other conservation activities include the Elephants Alive experience, rhino dehorning experience, and EWT wild dog conservation experience. All of these activities and experiences will not only enrich your knowledge of nature and wildlife while also deepening your appreciation of the natural world, they will also enlighten you to the importance of responsible travel and responsible tourism, which supports a sustainable future for Africa’s people and its many natural wonders.

PACKING FOR SAFARI (& PURPOSE)

PACKING FOR SAFARI (& PURPOSE)

The story began in 1999 when Liz and Phil Biden converted their family holiday home into Royal Malewane. “We were fortunate to have a beautiful holiday home in the African bush,” Phil explains. “We had so many lovely memories and special times together there, and Liz really wanted to share that. But it was addictive. And Liz was a natural. We soon wanted to share more unique South African experiences with our guests, our friends and our growing family.

If you’ve ever been daunted by the prospect of packing, this safari packing checklist should make things a lot easier and much less stressful. Royal Malewane’s Liz Biden suggests the following must-have items to ensure an enjoyable and productive safari experience. Some of her best tips include packing neutral colors like beige, khaki, brown, and olive green to better blend in with your surroundings (particularly during bush walks) and packing clothing that can be easily layered to account for changes in weather.

Here are some other essentials you shouldn’t go without:

Long- and mid-sleeve cotton

Shorts/cut-offs, two or three pairs for midday wear

Sleeveless shirts for warmer days (especially in summer)

Summer dresses for the ladies

Swimsuit

Activewear (for gym use at the lodge)

A lightweight rain jacket (ideal for summer rain)

A warm jacket or windbreaker

A beanie, scarf and gloves for morning drives

Long pants

Cotton shirts or vests

A couple of sweaters

Thermal undergarments

Walking shoes (for bush walks), sandals (for around the lodge) and boots

A sun hat or two (a wide-brimmed hat is essential on game drives)

Sunglasses

High SPF sunblock

Insect repellent

Camera, video camera, binoculars, spare memory cards and charging equipment

Royal Malewane also supports Pack for a Purpose by Travel Elevates, an initiative that gives travelers a chance to provide a lasting impact on local communities. It involves saving a few pounds of space in your luggage for supplies that will be a huge support for projects that benefit places like local orphanages. For example, you can pack items like crayons, glue sticks, and colored construction paper for arts and crafts, jump ropes, basketballs, tennis balls, and soccer balls for outdoor activities, hand forks and trowels for gardening, antibiotic ointment and band-aids for first aid, and castanets, tambourines, and xylophones for musical enrichment. Though Royal Malewane does not condone visiting orphanages, these supplies will be taken by those working with local orphanages and delivered to the children in an organized, respectful way. Your generosity and thoughtfulness make a difference, and it’s as simple as packing those supplies.
