Explore the Arctic with HX, like the fearless travelers of the late 19th century.
Crisp winds and brisk temperatures. Sea ice blanketed with snow. The awe-inspiring rumble of glaciers meeting the sea. Intrepid explorers once risked life and limb to travel to the North Pole. More than 100 years since Rear Admiral Robert Peary became the first man to venture to the northernmost point of the planet (though his claim is still in dispute), it’s more accessible than ever to explore the remote and beautiful landscape of the Arctic thanks to expedition cruising with HX. If you’ve ever dreamed of venturing into the far corners of the world; if you have the spirit of an explorer deep within you; if you love our wondrous planet and yearn to see more of it—the Arctic is calling and you must go.
The Arctic is calling… and you must go.
The Arctic is calling… and you must go.

ICE & LIFE
ICE & LIFE
Only a few hundred miles from the North Pole lie the islands of Svalbard. This Norwegian archipelago is a wilderness of snow-covered mountain ranges, iceberg-strewn waters, and mighty glaciers standing tall against the horizon. Approximately 2,100 people call this majestic land home, settling in the town of Longyearbyen, the northernmost urban community in the world. This unusual metropolis includes adventurers, researchers, and regular people making a life among the wild animals and stunning surroundings. Sharing this space with actual polar bears, the dwellers of Longyearbyen always carry protection when venturing outside; but despite the dangers, residents foster a deep sense of community and great appreciation for nature. And when you finally see it for yourself, you’ll understand why.

MANY WONDERS
SVALBARD’S
MANY WONDERS
A geological marvel, Svalbard is one of the only places on the planet where one can find rocks from nearly every geological period. This diversity makes it an endlessly fascinating place to explore. Indeed, it continues to be a place of remarkable discoveries, including a well-preserved Ichthyosauria fossil measuring 10 meters (32.8 feet) unearthed in recent years. Anyone with an explorer’s soul will find Svalbard to be a treasure trove of ancient fossils (which you can find on fossil hunting trips and take back to the mainland).
You’ll also be lucky enough to see glaciers calving into the water and sail through stunning fjords teeming with marine life. On-board Science & Education programs offered by HX will give you further opportunity to study and gain a greater understanding and appreciation for these natural wonders. State-of-the-art science centers and accomplished scientists aboard the ships guide curious passengers through real-time research, data collection, and hands-on experiences. With HX, you are more than a mere tourist—you’re a citizen scientist uncovering the secrets of the Arctic.

WILD THINGS ARE
Animal lovers, gather ‘round, for in Svalbard is where you’ll find some of the rarest species in the world, including Svalbard reindeer and the Arctic fox. Svalbard reindeer are the smallest subspecies of reindeer, and with their short, stocky legs, small heads, and stout bodies, they’re perfectly adapted to life in the Arctic. They’re also quite cute. Another adorable creature is the white and fluffy Arctic fox. They survive in the harsh Arctic conditions thanks to their fur, fat, and long tail used as a blanket.
HX is proudly a member of the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) and closely adheres to AECO standards, keeping safe distances from wildlife while still allowing passengers to catch glimpses of beluga whales, walruses, seals, the mighty polar bear, and other awe-inspiring creatures. Keep an eye out for sea eagles and other migratory birds as your ship crosses the Arctic Circle and sails toward Spitsbergen, Svalbard’s largest island. Camouflaged against the snow and ice, polar bears may be difficult to spot, so keep your binoculars handy. Every day on an HX expedition cruise to the Arctic will hold different wonders, depending on weather conditions and landing sites. The Arctic summer is an especially auspicious time to visit Svalbard, and you can expect to see plenty of wildlife activity.
